Mary-Sue as I understand it is much more of a fanfic social disease. In fact the phrase was coined in the Trek fandom. Mary Sue Television Tropes & Idioms

So many just getting into fanfiction want to write what they would do in a certain situation and basically write self-insertion. The thing about fanfiction as I've seen through the years is that it's easy to write. The characters, settings, events, plot devises are already established for you. So there is more room for creating the perfect character to deal with the situations that are already established.

Now, I know that the same can be done in original works, but most people who do that usually grow out of it after a few years of critiques. That is not as prevalent in the fanfic world, and least not from what I can see.
