Time now for the Week 1 topic!
Remember that this is Week 1 of a new competition! If you've been eliminated or didn't get in before the deadline, you're welcome to compete anew for this two-week contest.
Your Week 1 topic is...
Gathering Dust
Something that is gathering dust is immobile, forgotten, stagnant. From old books left in attics to memories of times gone by, we sometimes find occasion to stoop down and blow the dust off, take it into our hands, and remember what it's worth. Too often, though, we allow it to continue to stagnate; we leave it on the shelf and glance idly at it sometimes as though to say, "I'd forgotten about that." And forgotten it remains.
Sometimes, removing the dust from an old artifact from our past or from someone else's means discovery. An old diary can mean discovery about our ancestors, or it can mean rediscovery of our younger selves. The study of history is all about blowing off the dust and seeing what lies beneath -- it is sometimes terrible and more often wonderful, but behind it is always the ambition to learn what it could have been if kept alive.
Blow the dust off your muse for our week 1 topic.
Notes: Format refers to whether your entry is fiction, nonfiction, poetry, script, etc; this information, along with the word count, is used when assigning editors. Trigger warnings will be listed with your entry in the polls. Any other authors' notes may go on your entry. Good luck, and happy writing!
Submissions will be due Saturday, July 24 at 5:00pm GMT (12:00pm EST).
