I'm afraid that, due to several real-life things, I am stepping down as moderator of Inkstains. I simply don't have the time or energy anymore to keep this community alive or promote it for new members the way it needs. I would love to see it continue, though!

If anybody is interesting in taking over this community, let me know at any point and I will give you the keys, as it were.

In the meantime, keep writing, friends.

WELCOME TO INKSTAINS!

We are a weekly, prompt-based writing community, dedicated to helping members hone their creative writing skills. Whether you write as an amateur or professional, whether you’ve just started or have been writing for ages, and whatever your social or cultural background – we welcome you.
Questions, suggestions, and/or comments can be directed to your friendly mods.

THE CONTEST

Our main contest is a weekly stand-alone with a variety of prompts and, occasionally, additional restrictions to increase the challenge. Members are free to submit prompt ideas and will be credited when the submissions poll is posted.

SUBMISSIONS

Every Thursday, a moderator will post the topic post, which will contain the submissions poll. Here, you can showcase what you’ve done with the weekly prompt. Take the prompt and make it your own; we accept poetry, prose, prosetry, screenplay/scripts, fiction, nonfiction, and fanfiction. Art and music is also welcome, as long as there is a written element. You are also free to write in any language you wish, but please include an English translation in your entry - this is so the other members can understand your submission and give it all the votes it deserves!

When submitting, bear in mind that the audience includes members with different sensibilities and histories. Kindly include warnings if your submission contains any of the following elements:
- Explicit sexual content,
- Graphic violence,
- Strong language,
- Self-harm,
- Abuse/assault,
- Incest,
- Character death (especially suicide),
- Sexual violence and sexual scenes of dubious consent or non-consent,
- Underage sexual activity,
- Anything else which you believe may trigger a reader.

The submissions poll will have three sections for you to fill out. The first is a text entry box into which you can paste the link to your entry. The second is a text entry box in which you should include the warnings listed above, if any apply to your submission. These warnings will be listed with your entry in the poll; any other author's notes may go on your entry itself. The final section consists of two radio buttons - click the top button to request a volunteer editor or the bottom button not to request an edit.

VOTING

Use one account to vote (no sockpuppets!), but you may vote for as many entries as you wish. Feel free to advertise the community and your entry to your friends, but ask them to read all the entries and vote fairly if they're interested, not just show up to support you without reading the other entries. Voting will last from Thursday to at least Saturday; voting periods will be extended if many entries are in the poll.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Every Tuesday, Tips and Tricks will be posted. This is a writing advice column aimed at sharing experiences and helping one another with any problems they may be facing in their writing. TnT will also feature reminders of the current contest, any open calls for submissions we're aware of, and any humanitarian projects members bring to our attention.

Any member is welcome to write a column of their own and post it on a Tuesday, provided they include the reminders section. Otherwise, feel free to PM or email your TnT to a mod, who will be glad to post it for you with the appropriate reminders. Posting is currently moderated for any member not doing poll work to prevent multiple TnTs on the same day.

EDITING

You are welcome to sign up for an edit when submitting your entry – edits will be offered purely on a volunteer basis. We request that you stop by and offer an edit to someone else if you ask for someone to volunteer to edit your entry, but this is not a requirement. We will not, at this time, set up a regular editing team with assignments, and as such, we cannot guarantee that your submission will receive an edit.

FURTHER COMMUNITY RULES

We have a strong belief in author responsibility, and we are working to make this as safe a space as possible for all members. No free passes with slurs, "it's just a joke!", or "you're being too sensitive!". Really. Having a character with prejudices is acceptable, but the story itself must be presented respectfully. That means:
- No racism. This includes cultural appropriation, exoticism, etc.
- No discrimination against (non-)religion. Honest questions are all right, stereotyping is not.
- No ableism. Don’t throw around words like "blind" or "crazy".
- No sexism, homophobia or transphobia.
- No classism.
If any member feels uncomfortable with anything that another member has written or said, please inform a moderator and we will do our best to resolve the situation as civilly and safely as possible. Conversely, if we have missed something because of our own privileges, do call us out at once and please accept our apologies.

Hello all! After a long, unplanned, and somewhat confusing hiatus, [community profile] inkstains is revving up to come back. However, in the intervening time, the moderation structure has changed, and that has brought about a few small changes in how the community will work and much thought on other aspects.

There is only one major change to structure: At this point, we will not be offering a structured editing system. Anyone who wishes to request an edit on an entry can still do so; these will be compiled into a list for any editors with free time to volunteer to take a look at. Because of this change, edits will no longer be guaranteed for any entry, though if each person who requests an edit takes a moment to give someone else an edit, things just might work out to your benefit!
Any comments on this change are welcome, of course, but it's unlikely we'll reconsider until interest in assigned edits rises - and by this, I mean enough people offer to be regular editors to cover every entry requesting edits, and the volunteering system proves not to be working (i.e. one entry getting twelve edits while the other entries get none). It's a lot of work to keep an editing ship going smoothly!

Here, have a quick poll!

Hey guys. Sorry for not getting you a new topic on Monday - I've been sick. However, once again, there weren't any entries. Open thread - anything we should change that would make you more likely to participate?

In the meantime, I'll put up the next topic in a day or two, give you some extra time to write this round.

First of all, your entries are due in approximately 48 hours from time of posting, at 10 pm GMT (5 pm EST) on Monday, February 28. Begin your entry with the words 'It was a dark and stormy night'!
This week's TnT is still up for discussion if you're so inclined - stop in the name of grammar!

Next, we have some questions for you all to take a peek at. Since this community exists for you, we want to be sure we're giving you what you need. As always, if there's something you think of that we haven't asked for specifically, go ahead and let us know! We always like new ideas.

Finally, I'd like to highlight some of the ways you can get involved here besides the obvious writing and voting. We do have an editing team, led by the fearless [personal profile] azuire. If you'd like to join, you can comment here or send Azuire a PM - just let us know how many entries you'd like to edit per week, as a maximum, and we'd be glad to get you going! You are also welcome to offer up any contest topics, TnT ideas, or if there are any international writing contests/scholarships/opportunities for publication that you know of.

Anything we forgot? Any poll answers you'd like to explain? I love comments. (I'm also especially curious what your mouth might be full of. Delicious food is something I like to talk about.)

Good morning, my ink-stained friends! Don't forget to submit your entries for this week's challenge contest, Delicate, and feel free to stop by the TnT, where we are not judging a book by its movie. Any editors with outstanding edits, please remember to get those done!

Now, we're thinking about trying a slightly different structure, at least through November to see how it goes, but it's members who should make that decision final. We'd like to give people enough time to submit entries when they'd like to, but we need to know if you think one week is good or if we should try letting each challenge last two weeks. If we choose to change it, we'll check in again after November to see how you're liking the new system.

This opinion poll will be open until Sunday, 9 pm GMT/4 pm EST - and yes, this means that the deadline for next week will decided a little late, but the results will be posted in a separate entry as well as updated on the submissions page to be sure everyone is aware in plenty of time. Thank you all!

Congratulations [personal profile] pippin for winning the fourth contest! And a job well done to [personal profile] 1stmate in the FLOG category, too :)

Don't forget about the Challenge Contest going on this week - entries are due Saturday at 5 pm GMT.

Finally, a quick question for you all. Do you like the current structure of 2-week contests with 1-week challenge contests interspersed? Is there anything you'd like to change about the community? We're still baby-sized and learning how to do this together, so just let us know any ideas you might have!

Everyone else, please feel free to jump in and play FLOG! This week's topic is Second, and the deadline has been pushed back a little bit to close at 6 pm GMT (1 pm EST/10 am PST) on Saturday.

WELCOME TO INKSTAINS!

We are a bi-weekly, prompt-based writing community, dedicated to helping members hone their creative writing skills. Whether you write as an amateur or professional, whether you’ve just started or have been writing for ages, and whatever your social or cultural background – we welcome you.

THE CONTEST

Our main contest is a weekly stand-alone with a variety of prompts & additional restrictions. Members are free to submit prompt ideas and will be credited when the submissions poll is posted.

THE TOPIC

Every Monday, a topic will be posted by either a member or a moderator. It will be accompanied by a submissions poll, where participants can link their entries and request editing.
At this time, Dreamwidth does not allow members without a paid account to post polls. However, don't let this stop you! If you have a free account and would like to host a week or month of prompt(s), you are more than welcome to. One of the moderators will be glad to create and post the poll for you - with you getting all the credit, of course. Results are announced on Wednesdays.

SUBMISSIONS

The weekly topic post will contain the submissions poll. Here, you can showcase what you’ve done with the weekly prompt. Take the prompt and make it your own; we accept poetry, prose, prosetry, screenplay/scripts, and fanfiction. Art and music is also welcome, as long as there is a written element. You are also free to write in any language you wish, but please include an English translation in your entry.
When submitting, bear in mind that the audience includes members with different sensibilities and histories. Kindly include warnings if your submission contains the following elements:
- Explicit sexual content,
- Graphic violence,
- Strong language,
- Self-harm,
- Abuse/assault,
- Incest,
- Character death (especially suicide),
- Sexual violence and sexual scenes of dubious consent or non-consent,
- Underage sexual activity,

VOTING

Use one account to vote (no sockpuppets!), but you may vote for as many entries as you wish. Feel free to advertise the community and your entry to your friends, but ask them to read all the entries and vote fairly if they're interested, not just show up to support you.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Every Friday, Tips and Tricks will be posted. This is a writing advice column aimed at sharing experiences and helping one another with any problems they may be facing in their writing. Any member is welcome to write a column of their own and submit it to the moderators, who will read over it to a) check for any spelling/grammar/etc errors and b) make sure it's relevant to the community.
You’re also welcome to bring to our attention any ongoing external competitions or submissions call, so that we can share the news with everyone!

EDITING

You are welcome to sign up for an edit when submitting your entry – you’re guaranteed at least one edit per entry, if you do. You’re also invited to contribute your editing skills to the editing team!

REQUESTING AN EDIT

The editing request form is posted alongside the entry submission form each week. Spelling and Grammar (language consistency, punctuation) is included.
We provide two levels of editing:
Light (L): This is a moderate edit, where editors focus on the good points of the piece, but provide kind feedback on how it can be improved. Authors who are shy about their work but would still like to work on it should choose this option.
Example 1: A Light edit by [personal profile] pipisafoat
Example 2: A Light Edit by [personal profile] azuire.
In-Depth (ID): This is a tough edit that examines content and grammar with a critical eye. Authors who want thorough, honest criticism should choose this option.
Example 1: An ID edit by [personal profile] pipisafoat.
Example 2: An ID edit by [personal profile] azuire.

JOINING THE EDITING TEAM

[personal profile] pipisafoat and [personal profile] azuire run the editing team, so feel free to PM either of them with your preferences (how many edits you’d like per week, if you can edit poetry/prose/scripts, etc.) If you have little or no experience with editing, you’re welcome to read other editors’ comments before you sign up. You are also welcome to read some general guidelines for prose, poetry (coming soon), and screenplay (coming soon).
