I'm afraid that, due to several real-life things, I am stepping down as moderator of Inkstains. I simply don't have the time or energy anymore to keep this community alive or promote it for new members the way it needs. I would love to see it continue, though!

If anybody is interesting in taking over this community, let me know at any point and I will give you the keys, as it were.

In the meantime, keep writing, friends.

Yes, I missed last weekend, but I have a really good excuse - two Halloween parties and my birthday. If that doesn't get me off the hook, I don't know what will!

This weekend is officially the first weekend of NaNoWriMo. Anyone out there doing it? I got a late start, and am doing a bad job of it so far today (curse you and your addictiveness, Pinterest! Plus, I've read a book and am now watching a movie, I can really procrastinate!). But, as my fortune cookie said, "where there's a will, there's a way". I can make up for lost time if I really put my mind to it.

Optional writing prompt: An unnervingly accurate fortune cookie.

Honestly, I'm too tired to think of anything witty. The weekend just wiped me out! I did learn that I'm rubbish at playing the Tabla, but I don't think that really came as a surprise to anyone. Amazing teacher at the workshop, though. Not his fault I'm an uncoordinated doofus. Why does it seem you're always not impressed by your own talents, and wish you had others?

Ah, there's a topic. What talent do your really wish you had? And which of the talents that you have (that other people envy) would you be willing to give up for it?

Optional prompt: a meeting with a genie, but the wish comes at a price.

Don't forget about this week's contest! Why are the tissues shredded? Who shredded them? What can you do with them now?

And then there's this week's off-topic post about seasons.

--

This weeks TnT asks a simple question. Do you have any writing rituals? What are they? Do you think they help, or do they constrain you by preventing you from writing if you can't do them?

(Let's pretend I didn't fall off the wagon last weekend, otherwise my excuses would fill a War and Peace-sized novel...)

Autumn (for us Northern Hemisphere-ers) started three weeks ago, but this weekend it started to look like it for the first time. Sure, last weekend was chillier, but the leaves have turned and started dropping, so even though it's warmer it feels like fall. Which happens to be my favorite season, edging out spring because there are fewer violent storms and I live in tornado alley. Except that freak storm we had Friday night, where the thunder actually rattled pictures on the wall. But I digress (hey, I just got up, a little muddled, yes...).

Seasons! Change! Turn, turn turn... What is your favorite season? And why?

Optional writing exercise: a season holds special meaning for your character, which one and why?

contest 68's topic is fall
weekend chat would like to know if you are a procrastinator!

Contest or TnT topic ideas? Please share! We like community topics!

We've talked about this before, but technology (and inkstains membership!) is always changing; it's nice to feel up-to-date every now and then.

I have both Evernote and Journler on my computer, though I cannot actually even remember the basic point of Journler. (Presumably it was useful at some point? Maybe I should open it up and play with it again and see if I like it still. Delete it if I don't, use it if I do.) I use Evernote to organize my multi-part, long, or otherwise convoluted stories - I have a notebook for each universe, and each notebook contains a timeline, a list of characters, and any completed/posted individual stories from that universe. (One of my universes is about to need some sort of map of, uh, land, and another map of people's relationships to each other.)

But I don't like to keep in-progress pieces in Evernote, because I cannot control the organization within notebooks as well as I would like. (So instead I keep them in folders called "bzuh" and "stuff" with file names like "that one" and "the thing with the wings" as though that counts as better organization.)

What writing programs do you use, if any? How do you keep your various things organized?

Or are you a "short stand-alone stories only!" kind of person who doesn't need such organization?

I don't think I even turned on my computer this weekend, because that project that I had weeks and weeks to finish? I need this coming weekend. Amazing how time flies!

It would help if I didn't procrastinate quite so much, I know. And I always tell myself I will get things done in a timely manner this time, and then...

How about you? Do you put things off or are you a before the deadline finisher?

Optional writing exercise: a character puts off something just a bit too long.

Holy crap you guys. I am terribly sorry for forgetting your topic until now. I was so busy with school that I turned off reminders for eeeeeeverything else (which also explains my overdue library books, whoops). I'll, uh, not do that again. This contest will stay open later to compensate, though contest 69 will still start as scheduled.

fall

"Have a nice trip; see you next fall!" That was popular when I was a kid. Do you have a clumsy character surrounded by a bunch of slightly immature and punny people? Or would you rather celebrate the seasons changing in the northern hemisphere? Maybe someone is going to take the blame for something they didn't do. Don't fall down on this job: write something!

Contest 67 topic: premise: a character unexpectedly has an exact duplicate
Weekly off-topic post: kitchen disasters adventures
Contest 66 winner: [personal profile] 1stmate's poem (with a trigger warning! mind that!)

Today's TnT was suggested by [personal profile] catness (and wasn't that just a lifesaver this week, with everybody too busy to even remember to post the TnT on the right day, much less come up with something ourselves!)

Morning Pages are this idea (that you've probably heard of before) that you should write every morning day. Three pages of whatever comes into your head. Diary-style whining about your setbacks or extended celebrations of your successes? Fantastic! Three pages of I have no idea what to write? Also good! Sooner or later, some little gem will pop out of all this.

Have you tried doing morning pages before? (How long did your attempt last?) What's good/bad about them for you?

Well, I'm not technically late, it's still the weekend, but I was rather busy yesterday making little mini pumpkin pies. I will never do that again. I love making regular pumpkin pie, but the amount of time it took to put pie crust in 24 individual mini muffin cups was enough to make me tear my hair out. The made-from-scratch whipped cream was awesome, though.

And the secret to an even better pumpkin pie made with real pumpkin? Most recipes call for a can of evaporated milk, but I use sweetened condensed milk.

Anyone else cooking anything amazing, or tricky, or even horrible? Kitchen failures can be pretty amusing, once you're over the frustration. I've certainly had my fair share, in my quest to always try out new recipes!

Bonus writing prompt: something goes terribly, terribly wrong in the kitchen.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend! And don't forget this week's contest!

Here's your weekly "learn something interesting about your fellow inkstains members" post - which only works if you post something interesting about yourself in the comments! So, people out there, any unusual talents you have? Anything odd about yourself you want to share?

All of my oddities are quite boring, though I can write backwards and I did once bellydance in a giant bunny costume (it was Halloween, and there was a theme, it made sense at the time!).

Your writing challenge for this week (should you want one) is to write about a character with an unusual ability. Could be supernatural (I once had a character who could smell the future), could just be the ability to always shift perfectly from first to second gear (hey, it's morning, I haven't had my coffee, I'm not thinking on all brain cells here!).
