Happy nearly-Halloween, for those who celebrate! Welcome to the month of November, a fun-filled time of NaNoWriMo and, here on
inkstains, a month of challenge contests. From time of posting, you still have nearly two hours to submit an entry for Delicate, the third challenge contest - hurry!
A special welcome to any new members! Please feel free to jump straight into competition this week, and don't forget to take a look at our community guidelines and community icons. Let us know if you have any questions or ideas or would like to join the editing team! For our challenge competitions, such as this week, we give you a topic and a constraint of some sort. Winners of challenges will receive a small banner with their name and the title of their entry, if applicable.
Your challenge for this week is:
Topic: Everybody
Most of us have probably been warned about the dangers of stereotyping and making sweeping generalizations about any class of people. Each person is an individual; it's hard to use cookie-cutter descriptions for any group. However, some generalizations have their place. Even if they don't apply to absolutely everyone, statements that are true about most people can be very useful in some situations. What do your characters think is true about everybody?
A note on the constraint: You may mention additional characters in passing, but exactly two - no more and no less - should be featured in the scene. There's obviously a lot of grey area with what "featured" and "mentioned" can mean, though - enjoy!
(A further note to our poets and more vague writers: no, they don't both need to be named; a first-person poem that talks to a "you" would certainly count, so long as there's also the "I" in it.)
Submissions will close Saturday, November 13, 5 pm GMT (noon EST).
Note: Format refers to whether your entry is fiction, nonfiction, poetry, script, etc; this information, along with the word count, is used when assigning editors. Trigger warnings will be listed with your entry in the polls. Any other authors' notes may go on your entry. Good luck, and happy writing!
